Meiosis and Mitosis
Meiosis is the copying process that produces cells with 23 chromosomes. Each sex xell recieves one-half of each homologous pair. For example, a human egg has 23 chromosomes, and sperm has 23 chromosomes. when they join together they make 46 chromosomes. Walter Sutton made an important observation. Sutton was studying sperm in grasshoppers. Sutton knew of Mendel's studies, which showed that the egg and the sperm nust each contribute the same amount of information to the offspring. Sutton also spotted that the sperm and eggs had something in common: Their chromosomes were each located in their nucleus. Mitosis goes through (IPMAT) Interpahse, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase. Meiosis goes through (IPMAT x2). The end result for meiosis is 4 sex cells. Information contained on chromosomes determine many of our traits. Sex chromosomes carry genes that determine sex. In humans, females have two X chromosomes. But in human males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome.
This means that the males determine the gender of the child. Males only have on copy of the X chromosome. The genes for certain disorders, such as colorblindness, are carried on the X chromosome. These are called sex-linked disorders. Hemophilia and other genetic disorders can be traced through a family tree called a pedigree. A pedigree is a diagram that shows the occurance of a genetic trait in several generations of a family. You can draw a pedigree to find out have you inherited your hair color. You can draw pedigrees for any family.
