Protists and Fungi
A protist is a member of the kingdom Protista. All protists are eukaryotic. Protists are less complex than other eukaryotic cells are. Because protists are so diverse, some scientist think that it should be divided in to more kingdoms. Some protists are producers. Producers have special structures called chloroplasts in their cells. Protists produce food by photosynthesis. Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot make their own food. Decomposers get energy by breaking down dead things. Some protists heterotrophs are parasites. a parasite invades another organism to get the nutrients that it needs. A parasite invades a host.
Most protists reproduce asexually, where the offspring is exactly the same thing as the parent. In binary fission a single-celled protist divides into two cells. Sometimes, a single-celled protist make more than two offspring that is called multiple fission. Some protist reproduce sexually. Paramecium sometimes reproduce sexually by conjugation. They divide into four protists that have new genetic material.
